An Unlikely Beginning
CopyWatch, Inc., began at an executive PTA board meeting in a New York City public school in 1991.
While at a monthly meeting at their son's school, President and founder, Matthew Smith, with his wife, Leslie Rutkin, discovered that the school,
with a student population of just 550 students, now had three high capacity Xerox copiers - and none of them were working. Matthew, a former
account executive for Xerox, offered to look at the machines and invoices to see if he could figure out the problem.
His discovery - an overzealous Xerox salesman had persuaded the
principal to lease two high powered Xerox machines over and above
the one the school already owned (which was perpetually broken).
The school's copying expenses mushroomed to over $1,700 from under
$140 a month. Copying capability also grew to over 250,000 copies
per month for a school which previously had never exceeded that
number over an entire school term. Matthew succeeded in having two
of the machines removed from the school, obtaining a refund and
having the copying expenses reduced by 1500%.
